Enhancing the use of renewables for agro-food in Ukraine

Eco staff were contracted to support UNIDO to formulate Global Environment Facility (GEF) project proposals for a number of energy efficiency and renewable energy projects worldwide. The first such project under the contract was for industrial energy efficiency in the Western CIS. The GEF project objective was to develop a market environment for introducing energy efficiencies and the enhanced use of renewable energy technologies in the agro-food and other energy intensive manufacturing small and medium enterprises (SME’s) in Ukraine.

Building on their knowledge of the region, and insights into the design of high quality projects, Eco experts supported UNIDO in developing the necessary project documentation in close cooperation with national experts in the Ukraine and UNIDO staff while reviewing reports; designing project layout and preparing the full proposal.

Due to the legacy of the command-economy past its subsidized energy prices and centrally planned economic activities, and, later, inadequate efforts to introduce energy-efficient practices, Ukraine has low levels of industrial energy efficiency. Considering that Ukraine’s rate of GHG emissions per unit of GDP is also among the highest in the region, the country has vast potential of cutting energy use and contributing to GHG emissions reduction by introducing energy efficient measures and increasing the use of renewable energy in the agricultural processing sector. Based on our knowledge of the region and needs for GEF project proposals we were able to improve the project design and description to ensure that it wass approved by the GEF and made a real difference on the ground, thereby saving energy and reducing GHG emissions.
