Africa: Increasing access to energy through private sector investment
Eco Ltd supported the development of the Africa Renewable Energy Access Advisory Services (AREAS) programme facilitating increased access to energy in Africa. The objective of the assignment was to verify the market barriers being targeted through detailed design of the AREAS programme addressing market failure in at least three countries in sub-saharan Africa and preparing the project design documents.
Building on their knowledge of the region, Eco experts carried out an analysis to identify countries for the programme such as South Africa, Kenya and Ethiopia, where AREAS can make a visible impact. A detailed scoping report and summary was prepared for each identified priority country covering country context, renewable resource availability, potential market demand, regulatory environment, stakeholder analysis, problem tree analysis, market barrier analysis (technical, financial, regulatory, knowledge & capacity, institutional), identification and ranking of possible barrier removal activities.
The programme addresses many of Africa’s energy challenges with increased access for the poor and rural communities; improving energy security through the use of indigenous resources; reducing reliance on high cost fossil fuel imports and improving trade balance and protecting poor communities from fossil fuel price shocks.
