Question: I have a really innovative idea for a project – should I look into the Green Climate Fund (GCF) for funding?
The window that the Green Climate Fund is looking to fund is that of ideas that are ready for scaling up and replication, ready for the big time! So if you have a new and untested climate idea and you’re looking for funds to show that it works, then this could be a wonderful idea, but it’s probably not the best fit for the GCF.
There are other funds that are looking for innovation, such as the Global Environment Facility. On the other hand, if you already have a small project that you have completed or that is ongoing in which you have tested an idea so that you can now prove that this idea works really well and you’re looking for funds to scale it up, then this could be an interesting one for GCF.
Something to keep in mind here is what “scaling up” means – the smallest projects GCF has funded have a budget of close to 10 million dollars, but these are an execption – most projects will be a lot bigger than that.
